Serie: Early Local Period II
Chris Rudd (ABC) ‘Gas Mask’.
Talbot Large Flan B I, II. Bury D, E, F, G, Large Flan B (I, II, III) and D and Spiral were issued contemporaneously in small quantities in a period of local production. Bury D (from Snettisham) and F were early, the diamond suggesting a relationship with Large Flan A. Bury G (from Bury St Edmunds) was also likely early, as was Spiral. Bury E has two different styles of die. Large Flan B (from around Fincham) has hollow stars like later Large Flan A and stylistic links to Large Flan C and are possibly contemporaneous. Large Flan D (from the Fens) has the open horse's head of the earlier period but is derived from Large Flan A and is later. The half unit to the Large Flan B I and II is probably the Corn Star.
Talbot Chronology: Gallo-Belgic E/Ingoldisthorpe - Early Local Period I (55BC-35BC) - Early Local Period II (35BC-15BC) - Denominational Period I (15BC-5: Snettisham - Plouviez - Irstead - Early Boar Horse) - Denominational Period II (5-25: Boar Horse B - Boar Horse C) - Denominational Period III (25-45).
Cottam and Rudd list three types of COI 12 and one of COI 13:
COI 12a (Talbot Large Flan B I) - Corn Pole Beaded (10 known): Inverted corn ear on forehead; pellet ring around ringed pellet in front of face with pellet V-shape ('poles') below. Corn ear below horse has vertical pellet lines either side (See CCI 17.0343).
COI 12b (ABC 1510; Talbot Large Flan B I) - Corn Pole Plain (2 known): Inverted corn ear on forehead; plain ring around ringed pellet inside two pellet lines ('poles') in broken V shape to left in front of face. Corn ear below horse has vertical pellet lines either side.
COI 12c (Talbot Large Flan B II) - Corn Pole Big Eye (6 known): Upright corn ear on forehead, large lentoid eye; pellet ring around ringed pellet above short horizontal pellet line ('pole') above pellet ring in front of face. Corn ear below horse has no pellet lines either side; large pellets down left hand side of flan (see CCI 17.0351).
COI 13 (Talbot Large Flan B post-close) - Corn Hair Corn Ear (1 known): Obverse possibly as COI 12c. Horse right, high corded tail, bucranium above.
A further type, COI 12d, is in ABC as Icklingham Corn Ear (ABC 1507).
Cottam and Rudd Chronology: Gallic War Unity (55-50BC) - Post-War Austerity (50-35BC) - Peaceful Prosperity (35BC-20) - Client-State Conformity (20-47) - Claudian Regality (43-47).
