Leoni engraved this medal as an act of thanksgiving for being freed from the galleys. At the request of Charles V, protector of the Leoni, Pietro Aretino asked Andrea Doria to mobiliz and to obtain from Pope Clement VII, for whom he worked, the grace for Leoni liberation in Genoa in 1541.
