Humayun's first reign (26 Dec 1530 – 17 May 1540 CE / Rajab 937 AH - Shawwal 947 AH) was a turbulent 10-year period marked by the inheritance of a fragile empire, internal rebellions from his brothers, and intense conflict with Afghan rivals. He ascended at 22, succeeding his father, Babur. While he won initial victories, such as in the Mughal-Rajput Wars and the conquest of Gujarat in 1535, he failed to consolidate his gains. He lost the Mughal throne to Sher Shah Suri (Delhi Sultanate / Suri Empire) after defeats at Chausa (1539) and Kannauj (1540), forcing him into a 15-year exile.
