Nome e data del destinatario incisi
The present medal is a specimen retained by the engraver. The proposed new design was not adopted and to date the original medal is still awarded, as it has been since 1872. Howard's focus was steam but today the medal is awarded for outstanding publications on structural engineering.
Provenance: An artist's proof. Formerly the property of Allen Gairdner Wyon and thence through the family by descent.
A different observation is made by Pinches in their catalogue, where they claim the medal was in use in gold:
Thomas Howard's endowment fund is used to provide a gold medal every four years for a paper on the use or properties of iron. (Pinches)
