The scratches on the reverses of most of the 391 coins in the 'Fleetwood' hoard are, to the best of the author's knowledge, unique among British siliqua hoards for their number and uniformity in size and location. The author suggests that their regularity shows that they were not test-cuts, a practice largely absent from British siliquae in any case, but can be associated with bouts of clipping, and used to propose a rudimentary chronology for the clippings to which this hoard was subjected.
