Coins with an obverse bust in Byzantine style and, on the reverse, a cross on steps with the letters R-E-X at the ends of the arms have been analysed by X-ray fluorescence. Their metal content and style is compared with coins of the Byzantine emperors and the crusaders. It is suggested that they might have been a joint issue by Richard the Lionheart and the Templars in Cyprus.
