The history of the fortified abbey of San Rabano (Grosseto, Tuscany), founded in the 11th century, has thus far been reconstructed primarily through the examination of archival sources and the analysis of its architectural remains. However, what do we know about the archaeological investigations carried out at the end of the last century? This volume seeks to demonstrate the valuable contribution that archaeological documentation can make to the study and enhancement of this remarkable monument. The first part of the volume is devoted to an account of the excavations conducted by the Archaeological Superintendency of Tuscany, presented through an extensive corpus of previously unpublished photographs. The second part, following a concise overview of the abbey’s historical developments, summarizes the findings of recent research and the contents of the exhibition held at the Maremma Regional Park, when numerous recovered artefacts were displayed to the public for the first time. This work offers a preliminary example of what future studies may reveal, further deepening our understanding of this historically site and its surrounding landscape.
