I was looking for an Uzbekistan coin on Numista recently; I knew the face value was 50 so'm, so I put “50 so'm” (without quotes) into the search bar and got 18 results, none of which were from Uzbekistan.

Surprised, I tried to search for “50 som” instead, and got 3 results, still not from Uzbekistan.

I then looked up Uzbekistan in the country list and eventually found the coin, but was still surprised that it's apparently not searchable by face value. AFAICT it's because the correct spelling of the Uzbekistan currency includes an alternate apostrophe-like character that is not available on regular keyboards.

Would it be possible to make it searchable in ways that are available on regular keyboards, such as “so'm” and/or “som”? I know that for a lot of other currencies (e.g. the zloty) this is already the case.

Right now it seems a Hawaian Okina is used, don't know why that's the case.

Edit: it seems to be used also in Usbek … but yes, an apostrophe or no sign at all hit would help for search purposes.

The name os the Uzbek curreny is So‘m (cyrillic: Сўм). The Kyrgyz currency, though, is called Som (cytillic: Сом).

This has been discussed before, and I have assumed that “So‘m”was searchable by “So'm”. If not, it's high time to make it so.

Why not to just use Sum as it is used at the national bank English page?

Why not to just use Sum as it is used at the national bank English page?

Because that's not the name of the currency? As usual Ebglish is preferring the Russian terms of former Soviet republics.

It's not difficult to make it searchable for “so'm”, so I don't know why it yet hasn't been fixed.

Edit: By searching “Dong” you'll find “Đồng”, and by searching “Zloty” you'll find “Złoty”. So how is this different?

Hello,

Searching with “so'm” or “som” now return the expected results.

Xavier

Hello,

Searching with “so'm” or “som” now return the expected results.

Merci beaucoup !

…apparently by fixing the situation with Uzbek currency we broke the link to Kyrgyz currency; now a search for “5 som” brings up a bunch of Uzbekistan results but no Kyrgyzstan coins. If I knew that would happen I wouldn't have made the original suggestion.

Some re-indexing is needed and not done yet for Kyrgyz (and potentially other) coins. It should work fine tomorrow.
