Effectivement, le négativisme semble gagner de plus en plus d'adeptes, pour un site qui se veut collaboratif, c'est surprenant du coup.

Yes, of course, excuse me if i sound(ed) negative.
I wasn't refering to anyone in particular, just a general feeling lately.
I know, but i was apologizing if i was in that group and sending unkind messages :).

Yes, I'm against the badges (hence negative), and I still collaborate a lot (hence positive)? What's the surprise?

I still don't see why this should be added. A thing that is a good idea to add are notifications that thank you for your 1st, 10th, 100th and 1000th edit, like on wikipedia. You encourage someone to keep going without having to make it look like a competition or anything like that.
Good idea! It is not public so no competition feeling
It makes me think we could also send automatic DM to users to nudge them contributing: you're right, no need to have public info to reach my initial goal with this topic (which is to nudge people contributing)
For instance “have you tried to add auction result? Here how to… Etc”

Just please don't make Numista the same way as agressive as LinkedOut, which automatically sends you stuff you don't want and really do not need to know about and goes great length to keep you interested. As a user I would like to be able to disable such messages.
Yeah, let's keep those messages disableable and send only a message on the basics like how to edit or create a page. Just reward with a nice message when you hit a milestone and send a message to “newbies” to enjoy and how to edit Numista.

Personally, this would be a reason for me to not contribute. Please don't fill my inbox with harassing messages like that.
OK then
It was worth discussing it anyway ^^
Seeing all kind of emotions and ideas this thread brought, I would now be in favor of single encouragement message for “first few” catalogue modifications. And maybe some for very high modification numbers. And if anything else gets approved, then it should all be purely optional.

It's always worth asking, and I don't speak for the whole community.
Sorry if I sounded harsh, btw, but I really don't like messages like that. 😇

I hope, we'll not get any “spam” messages like that, when you're active, you have enough real messages to take care of.

True.
No problem, I completely understand. I hate spams too, it just depends on what you consider a spam ;-)
Again, this whole suggestion was discussed here only by estimed people which weren't targeted, meaning already heavy users and specialists of Numista ^^
I tried to find a way to nudge new users to contribute, because I think a lot of them are afraid/shy/do not know what's possible etc :-)
I would like to comment that all the discussions and differences of opinion that exist in this topic and in many others are respectable and that all these opinions (for and against) can contribute positive things to Numista. We should not take contrary opinions personally, as long as the opinion of others is respected.
I think Compendium is right when he says that, in my opinion, the most important thing should be to attract new users so that they become regular contributors. For example, in this topic, the vast majority of those who have intervened are already regular collaborators and we do not need incentives to continue collaborating (although recognition in the form of a simple "thank you" or badges is always welcome), but that is not what important.
What is really important is that new (and not so new) users are encouraged to collaborate. We have the statistics of how many relatively new users are involved in improving Numista? How many know how they can do it? How could new ones be encouraged to start collaborating? If we manage to increase the percentage of users who collaborate, the catalog will improve much more than if only the same users continue to collaborate.
My honest opinion. Oscar
Back in my early days I was making some threads that were compiling work that needs to be done where anyone could have cooperated.
Was that a good thing?

Oh, yes. And a lot did cooperate, but since then some more people have joined numista, and they were never asked to cooperate! I think, I see, where you're going, but you have to try to exclude the “old” contributors, who only did and does what is good for the common knowledge of coin collecting.

Worth trying I think!
For instance:
- adding mints when they're still in comments section
- same with catalogue ref numbers (it happens a lot I move them from comments to actual field, because the catalogue which was probably missing at the entry creation must have been added afterwards)
- chasing missing mintmasters
- fixing errors in latin uncial characters
- requesting missing rulers addition
- tagging
- linking every trials and pieforts to their corresponding circulating coin
- …
Maybe we could also expand hints from referees only to any volunteer contributors!

One thing I wanted to do is to create new optional menu in user my account setting, where user would let us know if he is able and willing to contribute and in which areas. This menu would open up those hints you mentioned for example.

No, why would I do that, since I'm already doing what I can to improve Numista (not the Canadian part)? I always go for the augmentation of our common knowledge, and I don't need any “claps on my shoulders”. It's all for the common good.
There would be no claps in that scheme. It would just connect those who would like to help with exactly those things where they could help.
OK, make some advertisements about how to help, and that's it? No marks, no nothing, just for the common good.

Hahaha! Common good pfff!
The simple registration of a new member is already a participation in the site
This is how Numista has developed since the beginning
The continuation is obtained according to the way in which it was welcomed and the quality of the response obtained to the initial reason for its inscription. A very large amount of the catalog was created this way, often with collaborations.
Nothing but the will, the capacity, the availability and the knowledge of each one can encourage to be more participative
52 votes for or against this topic alone is an excellent cooperation score
The existing counts are already an indication of everyone's participation, they should only be considered as personal milestones visible to all.
Providing the list of collection cards to be improved is one thing (you can ask for help), creating new counts, categorical or subjective, is another.
They can be abruptly interrupted either by the breach of one of the conditions mentioned, or by disappointment or discouragement
Let's take advantage of this topic to greet and thank those who have thus stopped although they are still among us to manage their collection, they are exemplary, seeking neither notoriety nor reward
To name just two:
And those who continue despite the difficulties, including

Proof that there is still work to be done without risking implosion.

It's not really or only as a reward but also for new members to identify experience members and seek advices from them if they need to. It will help creating links between new members and more aware members.
I still think identifying more experienced users is a good idea, with something like a little icon "special contributor" by our name we can turn off/on as we wish.
New members are interested in some kind of "mentorship" see this thread: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic136592.html
By the way I'm at 55,016 edits now !
P.S. All the commas, periods, I added to the catalog to achieve this mark, you wouldn't beleive it !!! 🤣 😉 🤣
