Hello

I would like to request the addition of a new issuer for Roman provincial coins.

Thank you in advance

  • the name of the issuer in English (and if possible also in French and Spanish)

En: Antioch ad Maeandrum

Fr: Antioche du Méandre

Es: Antioquía del Meandro

It should be under Roman Provinces > Asia (province) > Alabanda (conventus) > Antioch ad Maeandrum

a.k.a. Antiocheia on the Maeander, Antioch on the Maeander, Antiochia on the Maeander, Pythopolis

  • its Wikidata code (for example, Q854 for Sri Lanka)

Q579405

  • the link of one or more Numista records that you want to classify under this issuer

N#373307

  • if necessary, the list of other issuers to be linked by “see also” links

Antioch ad Maeandrum (Ancient Greece)

  • if possible, a brief introduction presenting the history of this issuer with any numismatic considerations useful to the reader

Antioch on the Maeander or Antiochia ad Maeandrum, earlier named Pythopolis, was a city of ancient Caria, in Asia Minor. The city was situated between the Maeander and Orsinus rivers, near their confluence, and was the site of a bridge over the Maeander. Its site was situated a few km southeast of modern-day Kuyucak, Aydın Province, Turkey, near the modern city of Başaran and the village of Aliağaçiftliği, on the Yenişer hill. The statue of Venus de Milo is believed to have been made by a sculptor from Antioch.

I cant create issuers of 4th level, I think they wouldnt appear correctly.

Should we just add “Alabanda (conventus)” under Asia, and then use mint field?

Hello

Compendium

I cant create issuers of 4th level, I think they wouldnt appear correctly.

Should we just add “Alabanda (conventus)” under Asia, and then use mint field?

Thank you for checking this request. I am unsure if I understand your reply, but I think the current system works well with each city as the issuer. If I understand correctly, you suggest that the Conventus becomes the issuer, which is not quite right: Conventi didn't issue coins. Each city-state issued its own coins and sometimes had its own rulers and magistrates written on coins.

If there are too many subdivisions, I suggest merging the province and conventus, as is done in RPC:

So:

Rome Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Alabanda › Antiochia on the Maeander

Thank you

Ok then my question is: are there issuers linked to Asia province and not Conventus of Alabanda?

Yes, many! There were 14 Conventi with about 200 coin-issuing cities in the Province of Asia. So some further subdivision of Asia would actually be nice:

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Adramyteum› City of Antioch

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Alabanda › City of Alabanda

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Apamea › City of Eucarpeia

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Cibyra › City of Cibyra

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Cyclades › City of Naxos

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Cyzicus › City of Miletopolis

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Ephesus › City of Lebedus

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Halicarnassus › City of Mylasa

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Miletus› City of Priene

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Pergamum › City of Mytilene

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Philomelium › City of Hadrianopolis

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Sardis › City of Traianopolis

Roman provinces Asia, Province of - Conventus of Smyrna › City of Magnesia

Roman provinces › Asia, Province of - Conventus of Synnada › City of Prymnessus

I also think that "City" of “ in the name of the City issuers will help to distinguish them from kingdoms, koinons, military camps, tribes, simpoliteias, islands, and fleets, which also issued Roman provincial coins.

Ok, I created the issuer under Asia for now. We can divide Asia in 14 pieces afterwards :-)

I just created these Conventii. Is there a list somewhere according to which I can move the cities? It is a bit hard to read from those screenshots before.

Thank you very much, Jarcek!

Here is how the existing issuers should be distributed, I hope it makes sense:

Adramyteum › Alexandria Troas / Ilium

Alabanda › Antioch ad Maeandrum / Heraclea Salbace / Tabae

Apamea › Acmonea / Metropolis / Sebaste

Ephesus › Dios Hieron / Ephesus / Nysa / Tralles

Miletus › Miletus

Pergamum › Acrasus / Hierocaesarea / Nacrasa / Thyatira

Sardis › Aezani / Blaundus / Maeonia / Philadelphia / Sala / Sardes / Silandus

Smyrna › Cyme / Hyrcanis / Smyrna

For the remaining ones (Cibyra, Cyclades, Cyzicus, Halicarnassus, Philomelium, Synnada) I can add some new coins in the future.

Sorted them out now. :) It will be effectively shown tommorow.
