Ancient city in Phrygia in the Meander Valley. The city was located near the hot springs of modern-day Pamukkale in Turkey. It was initially a cult centre of the Anatolian mother goddess Cybele, then a Greek, and later a Roman city. In the 2nd century BC, the city became part of the Kingdom of Pergamon. In 133 BC, when Attalus III (the last King of Pergamon) died, he bequeathed his kingdom to Rome. Hierapolis thus became part of the Roman province of Asia. In AD 17, during the rule of Emperor Tiberius, and again in AD 60, during Emperor Nero, major earthquakes destroyed the city. The city was rebuilt in Roman style and received the neocoros title from Emperor Caracalla in AD 215. The city minted bronze Roman provincial coinage from the reign of Augustus. The coinage system is unclear, with considerable variation for several denominations.
