To further sort out coins, medals, tokens … it is necessary to be able to find them in the catalogue.
For the moment one cannot select items that are not sorted into one of the subcategories (eg. token that is only listed as “token”, or coin only listed as “coin”, but also service token that is not in one of the subcategories …
example, try to find items like this one that are just listed as “medal”: N#439327
I'm assuming it's a bug that we cannot select the top category without having at least one subcategory selected.

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!
But it doesn't seem in appropriate to allow something to be in the top category if the sub-categories are intended to cover all the cases. If items exist that don't fit the category scheme my preference would be an “Other” category ("Other Coin type", “Other Medal type”, “Other Token type”, …) and keep the top level empty.
Of course you can find it, but I would like to find all medals that are in top category.
Adding an “other” in every level would be a solution … but would also clutter everything and make lists longer. I´d still prefer to be able to search for items just in top levels.

Now when I want to select all the banknotes in my collection that are not put in a subcategory, I just get shown ALL my banknotes … whilde I just want to know what 2 notes are missing a specific subcategory.
Here's the link if you want to try to search you own collection … it expands the search to ALL banknotes/tokens/…
I think the answer is there should be no objects in the top categories. But obviously there are and they need to be moved to a sub category. However, when creating a new object page it's possible to select the top categories so that has to be fixed.

Totally agree - That is the way I have placed them in my own personal spreadsheet. If they don't fit into a particular sub category put them in one called "Others".

Although it seems to caused by cataloguing mistakes (not selecting correct type when submitting a new item), this is also an issue for categories with a single one subcategory. E.g. souvenir banknotes have one category named zero-euro banknotes, but one can not search for other souvenirs banknotes that aren't zero-euro. It's the case for many medals and paper exonumia categories.
