During the Civil War, two short-lived governments were created. The Ukrainian State (1917-1918), which sought independence but aligned itself with the White Russian army, and the People's Republic (1918-1922), which had anarchist and socialist ideals. In December 1918, the nationalists were defeated by the Ukrainian socialists, who in turn were defeated in 1922 by the Soviet Red Army. The Ukrainian State adopted the Hryvnia (old spelling Hryven) and in the People's Republic it was changed to Karbovanets (old spelling Karbovantsiv). When independence was restored, 1991, both names were adopted on recent money, as well as on national symbols.
