Hi,

The letters are mint mark letters that are on the coin. They are small stylised letters on the coin. Most commonly found are AA.

one of my friends just pointed it out to me on one of the boat 2 pence. really hard to make out on some of them !  noticed on some of the listing on here now that they mention where the mint mark is on some coins.   some dont. Ive had two differnt magnifying glasses trying to spot them . maybe a mint mark location photo might be an idea in future on here for people like me ha

A loupe is always a good idea. For mintmarks, Spanish star dates and privy marks.
