The Schleswig-Holstein Question of the 19th century was a source of dispute between Germans and Danish which eventually led to the annexation of the entire area by Prussia in 1866. After WW1 Northern Schleswig (Slesvik in Danish) voted to join Denmark in a referendum. It was the only post-WW1 territorial cession by Germany which Hitler did not contest.
Schleswig-Holstein was ruled by Danish kings for centuries, with the exception of smaller pockets that was the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp which had its own duke. To complicate matters even more, Schleswig was outside the borders of the Holy Roman Empire and Holstein was within its borders.
The Danish only formed a majority in Northern Schleswig, the other parts were mostly German. The Schleswig-Holstein coins have German legends (with royal legends in Latin). However, the currency was based on the Danish Speciedaler, though with German subdividions.
I am in favour of keeping these coins with German states, also for the sake of ease of use of the catalogue.
Can't wait to cover the German States in the WCC topics!
