In December 2018, the city of Veszprém, together with the region, was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture (ECOC) for 2023. To commemorate this occasion, the Hungarian Mint Ltd. and Veszprém-Balaton 2023 Ltd. produced a circulation coin set as part of a special collaboration.
The set was made in proof quality with an additional token.
The obverse of the token features the Veszprém Castle in the 10th-11th centuries on one of the seven hills of the city, known as Castle Hill. The steep, precipitous slopes are encircled by a wall, indicating the former fortress. The token also depicts St. Michael’s Cathedral, built on the foundations of the country’s oldest episcopal cathedral, established by Queen Gisela. While the original structure was destroyed, its Romanesque foundations, Gothic sanctuary, and crypt were incorporated into the current neo-Romanesque building. The reverse of the token showcases a view representing the Balaton region. It depicts the Szigliget Bay with the Szigliget hills, alongside Castle Hill, Gulács, and Badacsony, as seen from the “Meszes-Györök” Szépkilátó viewpoint. Both sides of the token feature the official logo of Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture.
