Descrizione

The fourth piece in the series of proof coin sets introducing Hungary’s wine regions presents the Szekszárd Wine Region. In addition to the 2023 circulating coin series, the packaging also includes a 29.2 mm diameter non-ferrous medal.

The Szekszárd Wine Region is one of Hungary’s historic wine regions and among the best-known and most popular of the country’s 22 wine regions. It is located in Tolna County, on the easternmost part of the Szekszárd Hills, at the meeting point of the hills and the Sárköz area. The total area suitable for viticulture is approximately 6,000 hectares, of which around 2,600 hectares are currently planted with vines. In addition to Szekszárd, 14 settlements belong to the wine region.

The first to arrive were Serbs, at the time known as “Rác”, fleeing the Turks, who brought the Kadarka grape variety with them and were the first to apply the skin-maceration technique. The next step in red wine production was introduced by the settled Swabians, who pioneered barrel aging for the first red wines. Wine production in the region is primarily characterized by medium-bodied red wines with moderate alcohol content, made from both international and Hungarian grape varieties.

The three flagship grape varieties of the wine region are Kadarka, Kékfrankos, and the Szekszárdi Bikavér, which is produced by blending several different wines. In addition, the region’s light white and rosé wines are enjoying increasing popularity. Today, the Szekszárd Wine Region has become one of Hungary’s most dynamically developing wine regions and a significant wine tourism destination.

Obverse:
The front of the medal depicts the characteristic rolling, vine-covered hillsides of the Szekszárd Wine Region.

Reverse:
On the reverse side, beside the logo of the Szekszárd Wine Region, a wine bottle labeled “Szekszárd” is visible. Since multiple grape varieties are grown in the region, the design does not depict a specific variety but symbolizes the wine itself through the Szekszárd-labeled bottle entwined with a vine tendril. A special feature of the striking is that the wine bottle has a mirror-like finish, which effectively conveys the material quality and shine of the glass.
