Different versions of the same year.

According to Numista, the United Kingdom 1860 penny has 13 different versions including proofs. Does anyone know of a coin with more?

I think the answer will be blurry since it depends on what you call "versions" of the coins.

For example, if you look at the topic that I know well, Ukrainian coins, almost every coin from the 1990s have a lot of different variations. There are a lot of people who collect the varieties, some of them are rare, some not. There are some catalogs describing them. If you look here on the screenshot of such a page, you can see that 50 kopiykas 1992 have a lot of "versions". If the letter in the circle column is "П" or "X", it means that it is a pattern or trial. If a number 1-7, then it is a circulating variant, with 1 common, 7 rare. I counted 29 versions among circulating ones. I did not go through the whole catalog, maybe there are some other denominations that have more.

But in the end, you will have to make a decision "what do you define as a version?", which catalog should you use? Krause, Numista website, some specialized one for a specific country?

For example, Numista specified only edge variations and mentioning of the number of dots on the reverse, but there are many more variations among obverse and reverse as well.
The major types of the obverse are:
1. Average trident


2. Small trident


3. Large trident


4. Pressed in trident (maybe hard to see on pictures here, but very different in reality)

Thanks for your reply. My apologies. I did use the incorrect word. It should be variant and not version. I guess that I am only referring to the Numista catalogue. The U.K. 1860 penny has 13 variants listed, 14 if the km#739 variant is included.

By the way iiruig, just prior to replying to you I was watching The Daily Bald on YouTube. He travels around all the former Soviet Union states and loads content as The Daily Bald and as Bald and Bankrupt. He is in Ukraine at the moment. I wouldn't be greatly interested in travel programmes but this guy is excellent.

​Variant or version, it doesn't really matter how it is called. The point is that Numista catalog doesn't really represent all the variants of all the coins out there. Sometimes it goes very deep (like 1860 penny), or some variations of German Notgelds where you need to break your eyes to measure 0.5-0.7 mm, the distance from some branch to some building, or distance between the letters.

And in some places where the difference between variants can be much more significant (like Ukrainian coins mentioned above), it is not noted in the Numista catalog.

It just comes down to a person who first creates or people who update the catalog and their desire how deep in variations they would like to go.

It is hard to find a middle ground for everyone, because some collectors care about different variants, some don't even care about the year and just click on the coin from the first line of a page.

Listing the 29 variants for the 1992 50 kopiykas on Numista would drive some members demented. Thank heavens I only collect by type. Thanks for your replies.
