Links disappear, JPG stays

Hi,

I'm going through all the messages in "Numismatic Questions" for the moment (oldest towards newest) and I've found a lot of links, where there is no longer any connection:x So a lot of argumentations are void:. = KNOWLEDGE LOST:°

Please stop using links. Instead try to copy the contents of the links into any application, which can then be saved in jpg format.
I use MS Paint and MS Powerpoint. MS Paint is great for screen shots of images.

It's more work to use jpg, but it stays in numista until numista dies.....

Hi
Try using "Snipping tool" in Windows. That's a whole new ball game or rather say, the point of no return?...
:D
Alternatively you can use Wayback machine but only if the site was popular enough for someone to archive it and if you know the URL.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Not the topic.

Seems to function, can you start it with key-board strokes?

From Microsoft support page (Win 10), There's no keyboard shortcut to open Snipping Tool.

See if CTRL+Shift+S (Firefox or Microsoft Edge) works for you. Haven't found a good option for Chrome yet.

An (extreme) example:

I believe this is the best approach to make sure that the links posted on Numista are preserved.

The drawback I see with pictures or screenshots in general is that you lose the text data (unable to search, unable to translate, unable to view with a screen reader). Copying the relevant extract as plain text next to the link may work just as well.

Archive.org works also for non popular websites, provided you use it before the page is lost: they offer a "Save Page Now" option.
This is what is used by Wikipedia for example, to make sure that the sources of an article are preserved on the long term.

I agree if a valuable source to Numista goes bankrupt and no immediate successor steps in we will lose our rights to use it and probably most of the information here (pictures catalogue numbers) will be lost or outdated if the vast majority of the information is archived maybe it can be the solution until a successor fills the gap.

I my opinion I keep about 90% of the pictures/screenshots for safekeeping and if I used them for the catalog (pictures of coin edges, watermarks and obverse reverses) incase a rival site steals them.

Anyway I think there should be a discussion about archiving the vast majority of Numista and its sources to preserve important topic and of course if anything serious happens there would be almost a entire copy of this site with all the information to be sourced once everything has been put back together.

Sadly no one saved the site on the site so unless someone took a screenshot of it or is a time traveler the site has been removed from existence.

What's wrong with the old fashioned: Highlight the text, press Ctrl+C, go to the forum and press Ctrl+V, alternative: right click on the mouse and press "copy", go to the forum, right click on the mouse and press "paste". And in link parantheses (Source: www.ASmartGuyKnewStuffSoICopiedHisKnowledgeAndSharedItWithYou.com/SmartStuff) 0:)

Why making JPG's and using snipping snapping tools? B.
Everybody makes his own sauce, as always.
