Greetings everyone,

I have an overdate 1871/0 Belgium 2 cent coin. I can't seem to find much about it. I have seen where they exist, but no pictures etc.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill
Maybe some pictures would help.
Hello and welcome to Numista.

According to the Numista page, the overdate variety 1870/1 exists and is in Krause. If you have this coin you should add a picture of it to the page.

Thanks for the responses. I live in a very rural area, we have no internet access. I use my phone , but it takes forever to load a picture. It is on the way.
Thanks again,

Bill

Looks like a legit coin.

Thanks for the chart. You guys rock !
1870/1 is mentioned by Krause. 1871/0 however is not! And because I don't have any of my resources at hand, I won't be able to help much...

But I can see something isn't right with this coin. The 0 under the 1 isn't the correct shape or in the correct position. So I have my doubts.
Hopefully the more knowledgeable collectors can help here!

Regards.
So then I am assuming there's a difference in a 70/1 and a 1/70 ? I have no idea what to call it. Are you saying the coin is illegitimate or just not 70/1 ? Obviously I know exactly zero !
There is no such thing as 1970/1 or 1971/0, it's simply the way of Krause to say that 0 and 1 is overlapped. It's legit don't worry. Just to calm your soul weight and measure the coin. 8)
There is a distinct difference between 1870/1 or 1871/0. The first has a 0 that is re-engraved or repunched, the second had a 1 that is repunched (not sure what the correct technical word is).

As an example I have a photo of a Belgium 25 Centimes 1926/3. The date that is visible (on top) is
1926. Underneath the 6 you see remnants of a 3. If it was a 1923/6 it would be the 3 that was visible and the 6 would lay underneath!

Now about the original post from Bill from Burgaw:

The coin seems legit enough. It has had a tough time and there are many marks visible on the coin as evidence of that life...
I believe the 0 is a leftover from that hard life and not from an overdate variety.

I will check if I find this specific overdate in any of my catalogs. There is also a fb group I know of that is run by a Belgian who specializes in varieties, I can check there also if you like or you can ask them yourself (pm me and i'll send you the name of the group)

thank you I'll gladly take any information, as my knowledge base is 0
The admin of the fb group never encountered an 1871/0. He also thinks the lines of the zero under the 1 are inconsistent with a normal 0.
So I stand by my previous conclusion:

Legit 2 Centimes 1871, but no overdate variety.
As a sidenote: even if it would have been an overdate, the value would remain the same because of the low quality. Don't let the values in Krause fool you, these are generally for problem free good quality coins only and (usually) you will get a lot less if you try to sell it...
