Done.

Re New Orleans Mint dates of operation:  I didn't see any reference to 1942 in the link to the U.S.Mint's web site .  The building has been re-purposed over the years.  I believe the ACTUAL dates of COINAGE operations (for Numista reference)  should be 1838 - 1909. I have submitted corrections on the appropriate pages for several denominations  of U.S. coins   For reference see New Orleans Mint - Wikipedia      TC

They have revised the page I linked. You'll see the revision date at the bottom.  Yes, as far as coin production the last coin minted there was in 1909.   The mint then operated as an assay office of the US Mint from 1909 until 1942, when it was closed.

Respectfully, I think the dates of minting and/or coinage functions should be the criteria used for dates of operation.  Dates and mintmarks used on coins are a visible way to acknowledge this.

With regard to the initial date of operation for the New Orleans Mint - 1835 , I am wondering if law enactment, groundbreaking , or whatever reason this date is included is appropriate.  As for the years after coin production ceased - 1910 onward - assaying, storage, museum,  etc. are noteworthy, but not necessarily applicable.

West Point was used as a storage facility as early as 1938, but its dates of operation shown are 1973 to date (minting and coinage operations) . Using the current New Orleans criteria , the dates of operation for the West Point facility could be interpreted as 1938 to date.

At any rate, food for thought ?                                                             TC

I just had to mention that while in New Orleans I visited this facility. It is now part Jazz museum and part Mint museum and  still has some of the old minting equipment and a area with examples of some of the coins the mint produced. You must visit if ever in New Orleans. I enjoyed all aspects of the facility.

From the link I originally posted:

Prior to my request there were no dates of operation.  I have no objection to revising the dates.  Actually according to the guidelines the years of operation should be given as 1838-1861, 1879-1909.  The statement, The mint then operated as an assay office of the US Mint from 1909 until 1942, when it was closed  should be added as a comment.

1838-1861 ,  1879-1909 is more accurate.       TC

So …..  When will this change take effect ?   TC

As far as I can tell the database doesn't accomodate a split set of years like this, so it's been edited to 1838 - 1909, and relevant comments on the history have been added to cover the interruption 1861-1879, and its function as an assay office after 1909 (Wikipedia says it was an assay office until 1932, then a Federal prison until 1943).
