I have noticed several instances of an editor listing a scientific name for flora or fauna where both the genus (first part of the epithet) and species (second part) (and, in some cases, subspecies/third part) all have the first letter capitalized (e.g., Crotalus Durissus Unicolor).

The correct form is always to capitalize only the genus and never the species or ssp. (e.g., Crotalus unicolor).

Editorial note: When known, it is always a good idea to list the scientific name as a parenthetical, as common names vary wildly across cultures and locales, whereas the standard epithet will universally refer to only one taxon.
