We had a very useful discussion a while ago regarding the proper relationship between the different denominations in Portuguese India. This concluded with us recognizing a single change in the sub-divisions of the rupia, 10 tangas each of 60 réis before 1881 and 16 tangas each of 12 réis after. Following this discussion, I requested changes to the face values in figure form post-1881 so that they all represented the value in rupia. It took several months but eventually these were rejected with the following reasons:

We used the value in "Réis" instead of using "Rupes" for two reasons:
1- It is an integer value that is easier to read than a fractional value.
2- The official accounting was usually done in "Réis" due to also being an easier method. Many coins were even denominated in fractions of Rupees and "Réis".
Values in "Rupees" were mostly used in contracts.

I don't agree with either of these points. We use fractional values elsewhere (including British India from where the post-1881 system came) without any problems and I doubt very much that accounts were kept in "new" réis after the 1881 reform given that the coins don't actually use that denomination (although it does appear on the stamps). These arguments may be valid before 1881 but even then only the coins issued in 1871 are valued in réis, all others are in rupia. The banknotes are also valued in rupia and the currency is given as the rupia, not the real. Can I ask for a wider opinion? Currently we have a rupia coin valued as 192 but a rupia note valued as 1. Does this make any sense?

The guidelines say:

3.2.4 Face value
Face value in figure form
* Specify a number representing the relative value of the denomination to the base unit of the currency.

Have you tried a PM to the person who rejected the modification asking about the difference between the note and the coin and pointing out that section of the guidelines?
I did message monge to ask him about this, although I didn't mention the guidelines, but I've not received a reply. I'll invite him to look at this discussion.

Hi,
At the moment I am out, in hollidays, and with limited access to internet and specialy to my books.
As soon as I return we can discuss again this subject.
