Crowns dated 2017 and later have an equivalency of 5 pounds. Earlier dates are only 25 pence equivalents...

That's quite a change. How did this happen, and why? B.
The Royal Mint made the change for the UK in 1990 to give the coin a value consistent with its weight and size in relation to those of in the then current range of coins.

Is there a link to document the 2017 change date for Isle of Man? I tried searching but kept getting unrelated results.

How can we document this in Numista so people looking at listings don't get confused? Should we add a note to every IoM crown coin entry?

When searching for Isle of Man coins the heading is:

Isle of Man • Pound (decimalized, 1971-date)
100 Pence = 1 Pound

Could that be changed to:

Isle of Man • Pound (decimalized, 1971-date)
100 Pence = 1 Pound; 4 Crowns = 1 Pound (until 2016); 1 Crown = 5 Pounds (since 2017)
I found a statement from a government official in this forum from 2012:

Unlike the United Kingdom, our Commemorative Crowns have always had a value of 25p when exchanged, this has never changed.

The IoM web site has information back to 2017, and a "Currency (Viking Heritage) Crown Determination 2017" document says: The face value of a Viking Heritage Crown coin of 1 Crown denomination is 5 pounds.

I haven't found a confirmation the change happened, but the date makes sense as it was the transition from Pobjoy to Tower Mint.
Mike J. Southhall, the author of "Coins of the Isle of Man" confirms this to be the case.

It does dovetail nicely with the Government change of venders from Pobjoy Mint to Tower Mint.

While it may be tough to wrap your head around it, the "crown" of Isle of Man has a different value depending on the year it was issued.

Not a good idea to change the currency description, as Crowns are now a medal-coin denomination.

Aidan.
They remain crowns and they are valued at 25pence or 5 pounds. No one ever suggested a descriptive change.

According to some Isle of Man documents some recent Crown coins are valued at 25 Pence/Crown.
