I'm wondering if it's possible for a way to tally up all your rarity points and have an overall score? Maybe a leaderboard even? Although you don't need proof of what coins you own, so you can cheat it.. But what if you had to upload a picture of that coin to qualify for the leaderboard?

Just a thought.

But what if you had to upload a picture of that coin to qualify for the leaderboard?

Could be a way to organically push people to sponsor the site (to get more pic storage).

For what it's worth, I could care less about a leaderboard. That was just something gamey you could do with it.

A total score would still be interesting.

If you see it as a contest you could just not participate. If the thought of it happening in the background with you not participating still annoys you, I cannot help that.

EDIT: It seems like everything else on this site is “opt-in” so I don't see why this couldn't be either.

We get points?  For what?  I like points.

Indeed! Scroll to the bottom of the page. “Numista Rarity Index” a score out of 100.

Gonna have to exclude Exonumia!

Just to add, I would really love to be able to sort/search based on nri as well. It would be helpful to be able to add all your coins, and then just search for which ones appear to be rare vs common, so you can spend more time researching just those.

That index is worth nothing, Xavier ought to take it out, since members still think the value tells something……

I digress a bit with @Sjoelund, the NRI provides a good indication of how easy it would be to obtain a coin from another Numista member. So a coin with an NRI < 10 is fairly easy to get (most people have it, many will likely have it available for swap); a coin with NRI > 30 will be harder to swap as not many people have it in the first place.

I do use this number for a couple reasons including when swapping for high NRI coins to make it  “fair” for both parties, and even more importantly when deciding whether to buy a coin or not, as for one with high NRI I know I would have a hard time getting in a swap while I may decline to purchase a coin that I can easily request as part of a swap.

But I agree that it should be better noted that NRI does not correlate with the value of the coin.

I would like the NRI of the type to be exportable though (it's not selectable on the export page), so you can sort high NRI coins as the OP requested.

Coin enthusiast, always learning

On this thread, some members have discussed how many coins in their collection have high NRI values (90+, 97, etc.)

https://en.numista.com/forum/topic67955.html

One guy claims to have at least 74 coins with an NRI of 97 😉.

(Hint: If you are a specialist in one or more issuers that are not very popular, you can wind up with a lot of high NRI coins).

From a statistical viewpoint, it's hard to imagine how the scoring would work.  Average NRI for your collection?  Median?  Number of coins above a certain NRI level (90? 95?).  Percentage of your collection above a certain NRI level?  😱

I guess it wouldn't be hard to implement if there were consensus on what figure to use.

(Sorry for offtopic.)

I would like to have NRI both in search filters and in search results. It is interesting to know whether I have all the common coins; and I don't know any other way find out which coins are most common. (Top ten or so coins were mentioned here, but, for example, I would like to know what belongs to top 1000.)

The NRI was discussed countless times and I don't understand why so many people on the forum hate it. If you don't find the NRI useful, just ignore it.

Yes, it is true that NRI only partially coincides with value: 1 Euro, 1 UK pound, 1 US dollar are common, but the face value is relatively high (I guess there are thousands of coin types such that any of them can be bought for 1 Euro or less).

ūūūūū

If someone likes it, why not to implement it, especially in case it may facilitate catalog expansion and swapping activity?

I don't think it shall take too much efforts to be implemented.

These are fair and good points and I am using it in similar ways, even though I don't swap that much.

It's important to know that the NRI has no meabkbg what so ever outside the website. It does not reflect the overall reality. As long as you know this, the NRI can be used in many ways and be very handy, as mentioned in above quote.

Personally I would like to have a small NRI number for each year line as well, just to see what date is the most common — an umcommon. I am aware that this might appear as a little messy though.

The frequency values do essentially that already.  A USA steel penny has an NRI of 4.  1943D - 41%  1944D - 0.05%

Ah, yes, that's true. I temporarily forgot that. 😅
