Currently, there seems to be some duplicates for coins listed under India > Portuguese - India (Malacca mint) and Malaysia > Malay Peninsula > Malacca; for example:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces152252.html with N#49461
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces108293.html with N#49445

Should coins minted at the Malacca mint be moved to Malay Peninsula, or Malay peninsula coins be deleted (since that category contains less listings)?

Where do they belong the most?

Well in my opinion it made more sense to put under Malay Peninsula; the coins were minted there and used there afaik. Putting them under India, and then Portuguese - India, and then Malacca seems to be a bit contrived. But since most of the coins are already under that heading along with other Portuguese - India coins that are actually minted in India, I don't know whether it is because how Portuguese sources listed them.

I trust your knowledge to operate the choice but indeed we should kill those duplicates one way or another :-)

Any development?

I've messaged the referee of Portuguese coins some time ago. I got the explanation that Portuguese's “state of India” include several territories that are outside of modern borders of India but within the vicinity of Indian ocean, such as Sri Lanka and Malacca. According to Portuguese collectors, Malacca coins are produced or intended for all these territories and therefore sorted as coins of Portuguese India. Additionally:

Here we have a case similar to that of Portugal/Brazil, that I have recently discussed with Jarek and which is certainly repeated with many other countries or territories.

I therefore ask the team that manages the Numista catalog to also think of a solution that satisfies all collectors without hurting their sensibilities. I have already meditated a lot on the subject and its solution, as I've said before to Jarek, seems to be easy:

-Remembering the time when I was a programmer is enough that, in the field "Issuing authority", it was possible to add a second authority, as already happens in many other fields.

I've asked a follow up question, since multiple authority is not yet implemented should the duplicates in Malay peninsula be left standing or not? In this regard, the referee have not replied. I have left it standing for now.

Ok thanks

Only question is for where these coins were issued indeed: Portuguese India or Malay Peninsula?

Thats the thing. The information given to me by the Portuguese referee was:

Since its founding in the 16th century, the so-called "State of India", with the right to a Viceroy, encompassed all territories of the Indian Ocean controlled by Portugal. This meant that it went from the coast of Mozambique to Malacca and even to Timor. The main centers were in the North of India with the territories of Goa, Diu, Daman Chaul and Baçaim, in the South with Cochin, the island of Ceylon(Sri Lanka) and finally Malacca. The coin was primarily minted in Goa although, due to distance and urgency, there was often a need to produce coins locally, usually by foundry.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does that means Malacca coins are meant for all “Portuguese India” rather than exclusively indented the Malay peninsula? If so, I guess the appropriate thing to do is to add information and references present in the malay peninsula page to the portuguese india page and then delete the malay peninsula double

It is my understanding too

Can you do that ? Once all changes are validated, please list duplicates and we'll delete

I have requested some changes, but it has not been validated by the referee of Portuguese section

Was it validated now?

Yes they are. Let me request to delete duplicates under Malay peninsula
