Finding a U.K. 2011 Olympic Football 50p from a vending machine.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Going to the bank to get rolled coins and getting a roll of silver dimes (American). Another time asking for half dollar and dollar coins and getting a 1964 half dollar (Silver). Doesn't happen often but does happen.

Lucky! 😎 Congrats on your find!

I go to 5 different banks each week to ask for commemorative coins, I usually always get at least one to add to my collection. I live in Australia, and there are lots of circulating colored $2 coins, so it is always good to get those.

Some examples

Quite a few years ago, I was at a coin fair in London, and whilst talking to a dealer, with whom I had met many times, and bought quite a few coins, he mentioned that he had a very special coin that I might be interested in.

When I saw the coin, I knew I did not have it, so put it to one side whilst I looked at the other coins on his table. In the end, I bought quite a few coins, and as usual, he gave me a very generous discount, with additional discount on the special.

When working out how much I had paid for the special coin, it cost was £1.68. The coin I bought is in the link below.

As of today, I cannot find the actual mintage figure, or indeed a present day value for it.

I doubt if I will get this lucky ever again

I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.

Chance always favours the prepared mind. Sometimes, it is just luck.

I have had lots of good hits over the years.

My most memorable lucky find at a show was around 30 years ago, a rare Irish £5 note which a dealer had priced at £25. I was a bit cheeky and negotiated the price, getting it for £20. At the time, it was probably worth at around 10 times that.

Interestingly, it remains the only known example of the date, being by far the lowest printage of any Irish £5 note date (and a key date in the series from some collecting perspectives). Currently would fetch around £3k in auction.

Good hits like this do still happen from time to time.

I agree with you Hibernia that if you know what to look for, you can often come out ahead. I think that's b/c banknotes are relatively new branch of coin collecting & a lot of dealers haven't kept up to speed to the same degree as with coins.

I went to my LCS (which is about a 45 minute drive away) to pick up some currency supplies (holders & binder pages).

The owner got out his stock for me to look at & I picked this P-43a $1.00 note from Bahamas.  It is in UNC and may not look like any big deal but I've been wanting this note (from this era) for a long time and most on eBay go for about $20-$30 each. But what's even cooler is that it has a true rotator serial number:

086980 which looks exactly like 086980 no matter whether it is right side up or upside down. There are actually fewer rotators than radars. These rotators are ridiculously expensive for Canadian notes so I've never owned a Canadian example (unless it was a radar 0888880) so kind of cool to acquire this one for $12 (& I didn't even haggle) from a dealer.

-Yes, true & I had purchased a box of large currency & some binder pages.

And here's a note I got back in my Lotto ticket change (almost as good as winning 😁) about 15 years ago:

Not in the best condition but considering it is a solid 8 radar (actual rotator/radar too).  I always find it amazing how it got so much circulation (wear/tear) & yet nobody pulled it.  Anyway, I'll always consider that a “lucky day for collecting.”

It is newly minted this year. It is about honey bees. My new favorite Australian $2 coin.

I had incredible luck with half dollars one day in 2008:

Well i would have to say this summer has been great for US coins for me. Not for out of country coins. only a few Canadia  Well i will start with bank notes. 3 star notes, 2 one dollar bills and a 5 dollar bill.  Two small face bills a 5 dollar bill from 1988 and a 20 dollar bill from1993. Even silver been good. A silver war nickel, 2 silver Roosevelt dimes, 1 Washington quarter (1964) , and a 1967 50 cent coin. Other nice things i have found. Are 2 W quarters.  A 1981 D Susan B Anthany dollar. 20 or more non-circulating Presidential dollars. And 3 American innovation dollars.  I would have to say the biggest odd ball one was this one.

A 2020 P Bush dollar. Got that one at work, buying a smart water.

A guy at work gave me this gem.

It is, what it is, or is it.

Geoff - That is an awesome buy at £1.68, It would have to be worth at least £100 or more. You should take some really good pics of your coin and replace the crappy ones of it on Numista.
