With the great increase in the spam posts the last few days and the ongoing spams posts I think one way to reduce/eliminate them is to impose a one week new-user period where the are not allowed to post. One day would probably work too as most/all of the recent spam has been by users that have been members less than 24 hours. They join, post, then leave for good.
I'm currently working on stopping the ongoing wave of spam. The 24-hour quarantine period may help (the spammers would quickly learn to wait 24 hours though), but it would also impact legitimate members. I prefer improving the current spam prevention already in place. Hopefully, it will be enough.
Finally, I added a 24-hour quarantine for members which we identified as potentially risky.
Maybe it is better to implement such quarantine from the second post only. Numista may lost potential users who come to ask about e.g. a coin ID… They would simply go to another forum to ask the same
My personal list of scammers from Numista: erniemix, yvain, CassTaylor
The 24-hour quarantine only impacts a small fraction of users. I manually reviewed the impacted users this morning and I believe all 24-hour bans so far were legitimate.
Certainly, there will be some false positives, but they should be only a low number. And among them, only a small fraction of new members usually post on the forum on their first day of creating their account.
I believe it's a necessary evil if we want to preserve our forum and our moderators.
There are still a lot of spam attempts, but the recent adjustments to spam prevention seem successful: only a couple of spam posts popped up on the forum during the past few days.

I have only seen spam on this forum once and it was taken down with lightening speed. You guys do a fantastic job!
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
