A student asked me about this coin 10 Baht - Rama IX (Wat Arun; 3rd portrait) - Thailand – Numista

Apparently, a few days ago, one of the famed 2533 dated coins was auctioned here in Thailand for over 1 million baht or about US$31,000. Unfortunately, the only “news” we could find was all in Thai and I was a little skeptical about the “coverage” on social media posts.

1. Has any seen this news and have information from the “auction” in English?

The story behind this coin is that 100 were minted and to be distributed at a coin exposition in England in 1990. There are many conflicting reports on how many were given and how many returned to Thailand. One thing is certain that no one seems to know where they all went. The finance minister from the time period is no longer living and may have taken many secrets with him.

2. Does anyone have any information about this exposition? I can't seem to find anything about it. I have only seen the date 1990 and that it was in England.

In a word, no. I cannot find anything anywhere that would verify the sale at  auction of this coin. Auction houses are the first to boast about how much they were able to get for a valuable and rare coin such as this example. There would certainly be instant documentation about the sale provided by the auction house to the media. What auction house allegedly auctioned this coin off in the first place? That would be the first place to start.
