This subject was discussed in the past, then now we have the experience of the new spanish langage :

- there are too many forums : three times (three langages) sixteen forums

- too many complexity

- a community regression for a site that aims to be an universal reference

1) Unique multi langage forums, as proposed before, automatic translation as twitter

- there are many single langage forum which are clinically dead, no discussion

- it is not handable to go and browse all these forums regularly, I personally never went to see the requests for identification of the Spanish site.

2) Suppress exonumia forums and gather them as before with coin forums.

As a matter of fact, we decided today to add forums in Hungarian, Icelandic and Basque. Diversity is a way forward!

What's the meaning of adding new forums dedicated to a single language ?

Is there a twitter per language?

Multilanguage unique forums are the diversity in unity

I agree fully with Frenchlover, now should we go English or French (the original language).

Cut them all out and replace them with the only true solution … Klingon. tlhgan maH

Hello I am relatively new here but I am wondering whats the benefits of adding forums dedicated to  different languages as I understood form Jarcek ?? May be there is a point I did not catch?  I agree with Frenchlover, this will reduce interaction and diversity of knowledge in one place. I am from Egypt and joined this website around 3 months ago. I truly  enjoyed going through different posts about coins from all around the world, and currently the translation button do the trick. so whats the point  ?

Every time you click on that button Xavier (Numista) has to pay for it.

Then take the button out. Go back to the two language version since I suppose the French wiĺ stay. Heh heh?

My point was that I took this opportunity to hijack this thread on this particular date. :)

I suppose that having the interface translated into different languages is okay. There are browsers and plugins that can translate it but the automatic translation has bugs.

About having the forum in several languages (not the forum interface, which is fine, but having a forum, with all its sections, dedicated to writing in English, another in French, another in Spanish, another in…) I see it as too complicated… it is a lot of work for the moderators and administrators (they have to keep an eye on messages of suggestions, improvements, errors and problems in many sites) and it isolates the users in their language (I am Spanish and I studied English in school; I consult the English and Spanish forums, but I never go into the French forum).

Other forums (such as SMF, multilingual, or Euroswapper, only English) have the forum with its sections where it is written in English, and a general section (only one) for each of the other languages. All forums are seen by all users, regardless of the language used in each section, and, in SMF, the interface language is always in the user’s language.

This last is something that Numista does not do (to access the Spanish forum, I have to put the interface in Spanish, and if I want to see the English forum I have to change the interface to English).

If Numista do this (only English forum, with one section for talk in Spanish), we have a problem: What happen with the French sections (are too messages)? They will mix with English messages, or we will have an French Forum too? Really the original language of this site (and Xavier) is French (the name of files of system is in French).

Can be do (based in my suggestion https://en.numista.com/forum/topic125801.html#p1020342):

  • child forums with two links (English child forum and French child forum),
  • a new section “Other languages” at end with one child forum per language (eg. “Spanish forum”),
  • all names of sections and child forums written in the user language (as Numista interface).

For example, in English interface:

  • Coins
    • Coin information and questions (English | French)
    • Coin identifications and valuations (English | French)
    • Coin swaps (English | French)
    • Numista coin catalogue (English | French)
  • Banknotes
    • Banknote information and questions (English | French)
    • Banknote identifications and valuations (English | French)
    • Banknote swaps (English | French)
    • Numista banknote catalogue (English | French)
  • Exonumia
    • Exonumia information and questions (English | French)
    • Exonumia identifications and valuations (English | French)
    • Exonumia swaps (English | French)
    • Numista exonumia catalogue (English | French)
  • General
    • Numista website (English | French)
    • Free discussion (English | French)
    • Most Popular Coin Contest (English | French)
  • Other languages
    • Spanish forum
    • /* Add here more forums when Numista interface support more languages */

Non-English/French speakers users:

  • can ask questions in the forum of their language,
  • with the translate button in messages their can read anything in English or French forum,
  • can write in English or French thanks to automatic translators on internet (and if this is very difficult for they, have the forum in their language) and
  • they will not be lost in the forum because the interface (menu, buttons, labels…) will be in their language (if it is support by Numista).

Personally I only speak French, which does not prevent me from consulting the other versions of Numista
►the French site for the forums
►the English site for the catalog which is more complete there, and the forums. With this difference that I prefer an automatic translation of the complete page to follow the discussions and the debates rather than message by message, this solution is however adapted for a multilingual forum.
►the Spanish site only to note the increase in the number of interventions, disregarding the copies translated prior to its creation.

Tower of Babel comes to mind.

I think that having forums in many languages will work against building a tighter community.

People may tend to stick to their own language forum.

A game forum I use to be active on some years ago had a members from all over the world, at its height we could have over a hundred members on simultaneously. English was the language used, with google translate to enable communication. It worked well.

Hello,

You can now combine the various language versions of the forum: see the dedicated topic https://en.numista.com/forum/topic125802.html#p1060748

I suggest you open a separate topic to discuss merging the coins and exonumia forums.

Super cool! There is a little bug with negative counters:

This is coming back to my opinion uttered many times, go back to the original version, French and English, as numista was originally. Now everything is too complicated for no real reason. KIS = Keep It Simple!

You can keep it simple if you like (just set your personal settings accordingly), but why would you prevent people who dont see it your way to set their own settings?

Thanks!

If you can set it up in your settings, then I'm happy, thanks!
