Aspendos stater, counter marked + excited wrestler

Pubblicazioni di 4 • visto 69 volte

Hello all you wise people out there! 😁

I have come here today with a stater coins of Aspendos. It has quite a few interesting features which I would like to know more about.

First off is the countrermark of the coin. Does anyone know what it is, and where it comes from? My first spontaneous reaction what that it reminded me of this coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces228708.html, but we are about 1000 years apart.

Please have a look:

Another interesting feature is the genitalia of one of the wrestlers. It seems like he is, well, a little too excited about the wrestling, if you know what I mean. Could this be a statement by the engraver?

This is not for the prude ones, so be warned! 🤪

Also, the letters of the coins' obverse is “ΣΚ”. The only coins I could find that fits my coin, N#300083, has the lettering “ϜΝ”. Does the obverse lettering mean anything, or can we just delete those from the description and lettering field?

Here's both obverse and reverse of my coin:

I appreciate your help and your thoughts.

Sorry, I've fixed it now. The comma got included in the link, for some reason.

There are a few countermarked on Wildwinds

But no explanation about what it means.

Don't know anything  about the 🐥 but I guess in ancient times there were less taboo about naked people.
