Macedonia was a province of ancient Rome, comprising the territory of the former Antigonid Kingdom of Macedonia, conquered by the Roman Republic during the Third Macedonian War, in 168 BC. The administrative province was established in 146 BC, during the Fourth Macedonian War, after the Roman general Quintus Caecilius Metellus defeated Andriscus of Macedon, the last King of Macedonia. The province incorporated the territories of the former Kingdom of Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, and parts of Illyria, Paeonia, and Thrace. The capital was Thessalonica, and the governor held proconsular status. During the Augustan Settlement of 27 BC, Macedonia was proclaimed a senatorial province, governed by former consuls or praetors. The territories south of Thermopylae and the Ceraunian Mountains were also constituted into the separate province of Achaia in 27 BC. The reforms of Diocletian around AD 293, divided the Macedonia into four smaller provinces: Epirus Nova, Macedonia Prima, Macedonia Salutaris, and Thessalia.
