History: the minting right was granted in 1533 by emperor Charles V to the four sons of Count Alessandro, the brothers Giulio Cesare, Francesco, Camillo and Alfonso I. This concession was reconfirmed in 1559 by Emperor Ferdinand I. The Gonzaga counts of Novellara minted coins anonymously until 1650 when Alfonso II, son and heir of Camillo II, took over from his father. After a period of closure of the mint, it reopened in the period of dominion of Alfonso II (1644-1678), son of Camillo II. In the period of Alfonso the mint miner Giacomo Galuppi distinguished himself in the first period for the issue of numerous imitations/counterfeiting of coins from neighboring states, and later he was the main protagonist of a scandal, when towards the end of the 1760s the Novellarese mint became a veritable manufacturing base and more only of counterfeit money, but of real counterfeits. Count Alfonso II himself risked considerably during the trial that followed, even if probably his main fault was a notable superficiality in controlling his mint, rather than a real complicity.
