Camerino was part of the Papal States since 1444. Located in the province of Macerata, it began to mint coins in the mid-13th century when it became a free commune. In 1259, Camerino passed under the Lordship of the Varanos and continued to mint coins until 1539, the year in which Pope Paul III definitively closed the mint.
Note: the coins issued after 1444, and currently listed in Numista as “Camerino, Republic of”, belong to Papal States-Camerino.
