Why does this coin bear a date ?

Here's an official statement about dates on UK coins:

Why are There Dates on Coins?

A summary of that is “tradition”, but a modern reason is to sell more coins to collectors.

If you want an answer related to a particular coin please provide a link to the Numista page and, if useful, images of the coin in your possession you have a question about.

King Charles III came to the throne in 2022 - so his coins commemorating his accession are dated 2022.

The only coin from the uk to hit circulation with no date was the 2008 mule 20p

Found a fascinating answer …the date is  in the tiniest lettering woven into the leek on the coat of arms on the reverse of the coin . Even though I knew it was there , it was hard to see without a magnifying glass.

thanks, as always

Charles III 50p: N#341998

I would also add that this specific coin reuses the reverse that was used on Elizabeth II's Coronation 5 Shilling coin: N#5749

Other than some very minor tweaking to allow for the difference in shape of the coin, it is essentially the same. The date on this coin is also divided by the Welsh leek. Given the 50p was an “In Memorium” type coin, it seems somewhat fitting not to adjust the original coronation design.

It is unusual for the date not to be on the same side as the monarch for a 50p, though there are a handful of other exceptions. The EEC & Battle of Hastings both spring to mind.
