Germany

Hi all, I think it is time to talk about merging Germany (1871-1948) with Germany - Federal Republic into just Germany. With the introduction of rulers and issuers, it is possible to have separate eras for the same country. I remember when Germany was split into Empire, Weimar Rep, and 3rd Reich, and when France - Kingdom and France were merged some years ago, I think it was a great change, to treat one country as a continuation rather than two separate countries. I would like to see this happen with the two Germany listings. All of this is possible with having rulers/issuers/subdivisions while maintaining the many periods of the country. This has been on my mind for a long time and I am sure there are many good reasons why it should or should not happen, which I hope is discussed here. I hope you all have a fun and excellent weekend

Personally, that's how I organize my collection, viewing the DDR as a split-off nation that later rejoined Germany (that was the constitutional arrangement in 1990). When the standard catalogues were written, the two Germanies both existed, so it's only with hindsight that we can make this judgement. I'd be happy to see the these two combined but I don't see it as the biggest problem in Numista at the moment.

That's how my collection is organized, despite me being a SCWC fan!

Well, it would at least solve that awkward period 1945-1949 which technically belongs to neither German Empire (1871-1948) which should really be 1871-1945, nor to the FRG which is formed in 1949.

Here is a generalised history of German Governments:

X-1871 — Various Governments and Groups

1871-1918 — German Empire

1918-1933 — Weimar Republic

1933-1945 — German Reich, Greater German Republic 1943-1945; (N*zi Germany)

1945-1949 — Allied-occupied Germany

1949-1990 — German Democratic Republic (East)

1949-1990 — Federal Republic of Germany (West)

1990-Present — Federal Republic of Germany (Unified)

Technically speaking, “West Germany” is the same as modern, unified Germany and therefore is the same issuer
