According to both Archontology and World Statesmen, the terms Malagasy and Madagascar were used alongside each other between 1975 and 1992, the first in the Malagasy language, the second in English and French. The Wikipedia article implies that Madagascar is the noun and Malagasy the adjective. This isn't the easiest to resolve.
