I am currently having ongoing problems with another member.

I wish we could just block him.

Can you add a block button so you can block members whose posts you don't see, they don't see yours and you can't interact with them. Many internet forums have these.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you have such experience on the forum. Until we possibly have a block functionality, I suggest your report any message that don't respect the forum policy. All reports are carefully evaluated by moderators, who may take actions depending on how they judge the situation.

I'm not sure how such a block function could be implemented on a discussion forum. As you mention that “many internet forums have these”, could you please point to some forums that have it successfully implemented?
Unlike social media such as Facebook or Twitter, forums are built as threads of replies. If a reply is hidden because your blocked their author, the following replies may lack coherence because of the missing context. A possible option would be to indicate that some replies are hidden with an option to view them. I still have some questions:

  • If there is a placeholder for hidden messages, you would still need self-control not to use the "view" option. Doesn't it defeat the whole purpose of blocking?
  • Should the block be one-way or mutual? i.e. if you block someone, their messages are hidden for you, but should your message also be hidden for them?
  • Impact on community dynamic: if blocks are widespread, are we not creating echo chambers for some divergent opinions, which may impact the community overall?

I thought we already have a blocking feature so you can't receive personal messages. Anything more like shadow banning certain users for yourself is stupid. It's in the same realm as all these trigger warning people with their silly demands. If you see a posts of said person just jump to the next … it's not that hard.

I've never seen a forum with a good block function.

Blocking people from privately messaging is enough. Just ignore their threads/posts and move on.

My answers

1. 2 way blocking totally - you would need self control not to view - but you could unblock people as well.

2. Stampboards, Purple and Black, My MJJ Forum, MJJC Forum, all have successful block functions

3. Never seen the personal messages block function - if it exists, it needs to be better displayed, we are not computer engineers and boffins who can wade through byzantine layers of settings.

4. I believe in free speech, but should not be emotionally hurt by offensive remarks that compare politicians tp pigs and insult people's cultures.

As for reporting to mods, very slow to take action and seldom if ever do anything. Plus other people will often repeat passages of the posts from members you don't want to see. In my case […]

3. Never seen the personal messages block function - if it exists, it needs to be better displayed, we are not computer engineers and boffins who can wade through byzantine layers of settings.

It is in the member profile, link “Block …”:

But it is not show always. Perhaps is show if the member has private messages with you.

Wanted & swap list (euro coins & world coins, exonumia and banknotes circulated) https://goo.gl/AQjfKp - I have euro & world CC coins for swap.

That only works for the private message function, not for them interracting with you on the forums, they can still abuse you via the forum.

So don't engage with them on the forum, if you see a thread started by them don't get involved, if you see a reply from them in a thread don't reply to them. If they actually abuse you report it to moderators. How most forums work.

Hello,
Considering the challenges raised by a blocking functionality on a forum (see my first reply) and the majority of negative votes, I will not implement this functionality.
The Forum Policy and the Terms or Use have strict rules about derogatory messages. Please report any messages that may violate them.
