Uncertain Ottoman/Egyptian style 20 Kurus - contemporary counterfeit [Risolto]

Pubblicazioni di 5 • visto 102 volte

Hi all

Can anyone please help with identification of this piece? It was listed as an Ottoman 20 Kurus on eBay, but neither I nor the seller is comfortable that it is legitimate and they have since delisted it. They're happy for me to use their pictures/coin information here.

From the pictures, we can see that the accession year on the reverse is off-centre and looks a bit mushy (to me). The date should read 1293 but looks like 1292, although the first and second ‘2’s look slightly different. The regnal year is 33, which counts out N#49371 and N#24292

N#28412 is the other possibility, but the regnal year is where the value should be and the reverse doesn't match.

It measures 35mm in diameter and weighs 21.87g, so around 2g underweight for the Ottoman coins and 6g for the Egyptian. Seller is currently unable to test magnetism.

Since it doesn't resemble (to my amateur eye) the mass-produced modern fakes we see of old, large silver coins, is contemporary counterfeit the most likely solution or could it be anything else?

Many thanks in advance

Definitely something odd about it. Looks to have a gold coating that has long worn off
