Why are languages more important than the coin content?

Why do we need all those languages, since automatic translation is at hand?

I prefer to have the coin related stuff treated with priority, and languages with a rather low priority.

I agree,  if I look at the coins accepted by master referees in the past 100 days for Canada, I really wonder where Numista is going  !?!

Missing mintage, reference numbers, series, artist and engravers not to mention french titles and descriptions etc. Easy to find infos on the RCM web site. 🙄
 

P.S. It’s about time we get a solution for SETS instead of more languages IMO but it’s not in the Numista (2024) plans again this year 😉

About the topic tittle: Why are languages more important than the coin content?
The coin content is not at risk: it is displayed in the image, described in the “Description” field, writing in the “Lettering” field, what is translating in the “Translation of the lettering” field, and commented in the “Comments” fields (all these in English and French only, and I do not see any protests).

I would ask: Why display the names in the local language of the coin (off the coin page) is more important than understand the content of the coin?

Why should they be mutually exclusive?
The coin pages can be improved and the website can be translated, all at the same time.

We had a (bilingual) SUPER referee before (Québécois) and he was fired for a stupidity about TAGS just over 100 days ago. Since he was force to leave, the information quality (for the Canadian issuer) of the catalog has decline.

Why do not you use the browser's automatic translation?

I think with French, English, Spanish and German we cover most of the Numista's users and we should concentrate on filling the crucial blank info like MINTAGE of a coin BEFORE putting more efforts in languages. Like you said, members can use browser translation meanwhile. 

I ask you, poor content in as many languages as possible, is this the new Numista ?

You take a good look at the history of suggestions, you will realize this was asked for more than 8 years now. Before Banknotes, Exonumia and translations and many other features !

The translations :
At creation: photo of the piece + transcription of the visual examination
Upon validation: photo comparison + documentation to catalog
Then come the forums with their various acceptances and tolerances
For the exchanges everyone manages

As David said  language translation is complementary to the primary cataloging target.

The fact is that they are completely different things, made by different people!

I translate into Spanish, and no matter how much I want to, I can not translate into French because I do not speak French; I can not enhancement the information of coin pages because I have not access to their reference catalogs; I can not create new features in Numista because I am not programmer in Numista neither owner of Numista. I can not modify the catalog because I am not referee neither catalog administrator... but I can translate Numista to Spanish because I want be translator of Numista.

When I translate into Spanish, I do not prevent other members of Numista from translating into French, modifying the catalog, or creating new feature.

Saying that because Numista is translated into other languages, other things are stopped… it does not make sense.

I see and understand you. Your role seems quite well defined.

I'm just a member being at ease with quite a few languages, but I always want to read the forae to see all the contributions and for some languages I'll need the translator. My main concern is that the content of Numista is really up to the best, that no double year line indicating a variant is left without a documentation! That what the members expect. 

Personally I don't need Arab, Siamese, Finnish or what have you, in numista, members can or could always write their messages in their own language (or use the Google translator) and I could read them either by knowing the language or using the translator. So why invest all that effort on the languages, in the end it now ends up in quarrels about centavos being called cents, penni being called penny or even maybe cents. It's becoming a Kindergarten recreation discussion, but it brings strictly nothing new into the area of numismatics.

If you believe the legacy of Numista catalogue is defined by the quality of its content, I don't see reasons to restrict this quality content only for English speakers.

At worst, translating Numista will spread that knowledge to more collectors worldwide (it'll help e.g. Numista to be better ranked on Google for these languages), that's a noble pursuit per se. At best, it'll attract experts that are not comfortable with writing in English (not only the content is being translated, but also the contributing tools, refereeing tools, the forum, etc.).

There are sites that crawl and AI-translate (often with terrible results) content by Numista and its contributors into many diverse languages (as it has been reported many times in this forum), and people are gaining money with that (via advertising, etc.). Translating Numista could help it consolidate ownership over its own content.

Anyone can freely submit edits with missing information…its as easy as writing a forum post…
