1. Numismatic Association of Australia

The late Ray Jewell instigated a meeting in the early 1980s with numismatists from each State with the view to establishing a national body to both speak on behalf of all collectors in Australia and produce a national journal. Volume 1 of the NAA journal was printed in 1985, and some years later a constitution was formerly adopted. Funds were raised by holding fairs and receiving donations from the issuing authorities. Today funds are raised by sponsorships, memberships, donations and the sponsoring State societies.

The Numismatic Association of Australia runs a biennial conference at varying locations around Australia. The first of these conferences was held in 2005, and this plus the subsequent conferences in 2007 – 2011 were hosted by the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS) at Macquarie University. The Association’s 2013 conference was held at the Irish Club in Brisbane, the 2015 conference was held at the Naval, Military and Air Force Club of South Australia in Adelaide, and the 2017 conference was held at the Royal Society of Victoria in Melbourne during the weekend of 21 – 22 October 2017. The NAAC2019 Conference (The eighth biennial conference) was held at the State Library of NSW (corner of Macquarie Street and Shakespeare Place, Sydney) during the weekend of Saturday 6 – Sunday 7 April and is supported by the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatics at Macquarie University. NAAC2023 Conference (The ninth) was held at the Naval, Military & Airforce Club, Adelaide on the weekend of 19th – 20th August 2023.

The Numismatic Association of Australia held International Coin Fairs in 1992 (Sydney, Adelaide), 1993 (Brisbane) and 1996 (Adelaide) and 2002.

The Association makes two awards, the Ray Jewell Award and the Paul Simon Memorial Award, and Awards Committees are established for each of these.
