Currency code: 376 • espagne

We have two coins with the denomination: 28089 • 376 → ¼ Real - 1/4

The numeric value (1/4) is correct, but N#115308 should have this new denomination:

  • Name: 1 Cuartillo
  • Numeric value: 1/4

Is not Cuartillo literally ¼? :D

Catalogue administrator

Yes, of course: 1 Cuartillo = 1/4 Real

But I think the first coin is just 1/4 Real, and the second coin was issued with the name of “Cuartillo” (with value of 1/4 Real).

@zegeri can give a better opinion about this.

I believe that “Cuartillo” is the colloquial way in which 1/4 Real coins were denominated, so, unless that denomination is seen on the coin, I would always write 1/4 Real, at most, we could write 1/4 Real "Cuartillo".

Yes, I think that is it (an official denomination, like Quarter = 1/4 Dollar) after reading all information on the Internet about the Real (1497-1833) currency and the different values of the denominations over time! 🤔😅

Read and correct this about the real (1497-1833), please: https://es.numista.com/forum/topic144790.html (Before request more changes in this currency, the best is write all here, in Spanish.)

I found these sources about the cuartillo (Felipe II, 1566-1598)

I think is a name of coin, not a nickname. But I am not sure… @zegeri

Cuartillo is used in other coins. too:

Sí, cuartillo es el nombre oficial de la moneda. También se llamó cuartillo a una de Enrique IV de Castilla.

I added this.

Thanks @Jarcek!

I saw estrange things in this new denomination. I visited the page with changes in denominations https://en.numista.com/catalogue/changes/denominations.php and there are some errors to fix in “1 Cuartillo” entity:

  • Must be added: Numerator/denominator = 1/4
  • English/Spanish name are “1 Cuartillo” (correct). The others languages have “1/4 Real” (incorrect; they must be left blank, and after be translated).

Should be ok now?
