Reuse of same picture for multiple coins

Today I wanted to look at the variation between countries, if any, of the reverse face of 2 euros coins, first map.  After awhile of looking I realized the same picture was being used over and over (7 of the 14 coins).  Is this allowed?

No.

Guidelines: Picture (obverse, reverse, and edge)

(The link in the quote is from the guidelines and doesn't currently display any coins. I made a separate post about that bug.)

Not sure the exact examples, but I think this was done occasionally in early days of Numsta, because I have also found some earlier coins where same photo was used for similar types where one of them was rare and a photo difficult to find.

Would it be possible to have a check for duplicate pictures so types that need new pictures can be marked?

The same applies to 1 euro coins:  7 out of 14 have same picture for reverse

and 50 euro cents: 8 out of 15 have same picture for reverse

and 2 euros 2nd map: 10 out of 30 have same picture for reverse

These are all standard circulating coins. None are rare.

I ended up going to Ucoin and Colnect to find what I was looking for.

If the picture source is the same and taken under the same lighting conditions I don't see a problem using the same picture for coins using the exact same master die. I refuse to take and edit the exact same picture a dozen + times if you want I can add some different noise pattern so the pixels look slightly different.

But yes, using pictures of different sources look like Frankenstein's Monster and if different mints are involved and many many years lie between the coin issue you would have to be very sure that there are no master die changes.

For new Euros pages there seems to be one picture from albinh is used for everything and then somehow not always replaced when the coin is out.

So you're saying it is allowed and is acceptable under certain conditions.

Belgium 2007

Finland 2013

Netherlands 2014

I have not said it's allowed. I just don't see the point in certain situations.

I see, you wanted to show the “O” in EURO can be either on the outer ring or on both?

I honestly think it should be forbidden to reuse the same image, but I cannot see, how the referees can verify it?

Just for the fun, kmA261 versus km261, shows the O in both positions, but of course one is a clone and the other not!

KMA261

KM261

Interesting, isn't it?

The coins mentioned in the last reply:

KM# 261: N#2994

KM# A261: N#327881

Sorry, I should have mentioned it. It was mostly to show the position of the “O” in Euro and I had them at hand.

Yes. Problem in Numista is that even for this very unique mule coin the reverse shares the same picture as 3 other coins.  If you wanted to use the Numista image of the reverse of the mule you probably would have the wrong reverse without knowing it.

2008 Germany mule

2006 San Marino (non-circulating coin)

2007 Ireland

2004 Greece

Honestly, I never noticed the reuse was that used on the euro coins and maybe many other places?

Yes other places as well but the euros are somewhat unique in that the same reverses are used for multiple years for multiple countries so the same picture can be submitted to multiple referees.

I have re-photographed my 2008 Hamburg F Mule coin

I have re-photographed my 2008 Hamburg Regular coin (I used a J version)

and re-uploaded the pictures. Just waiting for validation.

This is my mule coin in coin flip.

Hopefully this will resolve any issues you guys have regarding this coin.

I will also be re-doing a lot of pictures of coins I uploaded in the past using my new camera and lighting setup.
