Reeded v Smooth edge (Peru KM#246)

Dicussione circa Peru • 25 Centavos (Large coat of arms)

There is an old French discussion here: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic32788.html

The general consensus is #246.1 (1966-1968) has a reeded edge, and #246.2 (1968-1973) has a smooth edge.

This matches what I own (1967, 1970, 1972), but is not what is reflected in Krause (says all years are reeded). I suspect Krause is incorrect, and #246.2 is smooth.

Does anyone have any information to dispute this conclusion?

Hi gyoschak

Sorry, my first post was not finished!

I agree with you, Krause is wrong.

The imagen of my 25 Centavos show quite clearly that 1968 is reeded and 1969 is smooth.

Should the types be split with separate Numista pages for .1 and .2?

(Compute the surface area of the edge. If there was a major change on that much surface area on the Obverse or Reverse it would be considered a new type.)

No, it's not needed, reeded/plain is very easy to distinguish!

Why is “easy to distinguish” a reason to keep items together? Shouldn't it be the opposite, items similar should be in the same type and items with clear differences should be separate.

From the Numista guidelines for coin types:

Coin types are split on independent pages when they feature:

  • Significant design differences (design, orientation, size, edges, etc.)

As you like, it's really of no importance as long as the appropriate KM# is used and not a non-existent “ROOF#”
