Hi,

The site rework is alredy a few weeks old, but there's one thing I have in mind that hasn't been talked much.

Before the rework, we had random coins, notes and exonumia, 5 each, total 15 itens at display at the front page.

With the rework, the 3 displays at the front page were fused into one, random itens, with 5 itens only.

And I'm asking myself, is 5 itens enough or too few? What would be the ideal number to display, 10?

Instead of outright suggesting the display to be increased to 10, I'll ask what would be the preference of you folks:

A - keep at 5

B - increase to 10

C - increase to 15

Thanks for reading, and pardon if it sounds silly.

I very rarely see the home page but seeing this post, I thought I would visit.

When I clicked on one of the UK coins listed, it took me to UK Banknotes so I couldn't see the coin.

Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

Former coin and banknote catalogue referee.

The number isn't five, it depends on the width of the window (apparently with five as a maximum).

I don't know why the random items are listed, but I suspect they are at least partially intended to pique the interest of a potential new user. The previous display could catch the eye of coin, banknote, or exonumia collectors. Just now I loaded the main page with five coins so it could appeal to fewer collectors.

Adding more items would increase the chance that someone would be interested in something, but appeal could also be increased by returning to the forced diversity of the previous home page selection.

Did you click on the image, the issuer name, or the item name? The first and last are supposed to go to the item but the issuer name goes to all items from the issuer.

Hello,

I increased the number and diversity of random items on the home page.

It could be interesting to include random items on the catalogue page too (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php)…

Thanks Xavier.

I admit that I wasn't expecting the number to be increased to 12 (11 itens + the “explore” button), I was expecting a number multiple of 5 because of the previous main page design.

For the catalog start page, the random itens section would be positioned below or above the 12 catalog buttons?

The previous design had 6 items (5 images + 1 button). Switching to 2 lines, it becomes 12 items (11 images + 1 button).
Depending on your screen size, you may see less items.

I'm not sure yet about the change to the catalogue start page. It's just an early idea for the moment. I just find it weird that we have both an entry page for the catalogue and a home page. It could be nice to merge somehow.

If we ever get back to a dedicated full size desktop page on a theoretical Numista 3.0 design the two pages could be easily combined with the use of side panels etc.. But with cramped phones this could get easily overloaded very fast.

3.0?

Side panels can be shown below on mobile screens. And we could reorganize information…

Even without redesigning everything, we could probably enhance the current design by merging information of the home page into other pages. For example, move random items onto the catalogue page; move the description of the collection feature onto the page “My collection” if you are not logged in; enhance the About page; etc.

I also would like to remove the double menu, which was a terrible idea. There could be a single menu: Catalogue - Books - My collection - Swaps - Forum - News - Outings - FAQ. And maybe split Outings into Agenda and Directory if there is enough space. The rest (Messages, Profile, Settings (including wishes), Log out) would be in a vertical menu accessible from the account button.

I meant 3.0 in the sense of the first two as well as the last two I would say are only iterative design versions of Numista 1 and Numista 2. At least as a user I see it that way, with the old Numista (older bulletin board designs) and in 2018 the new design Numista (don't really now what goes on on the back-end).
