I think a list should be created, agreed upon as best we can and placed in the guidelines for all to be able to refer to. This list would be how to place items in a category. If an item falls into a category moving down the list then it is placed in that category and goes no further down the list. For instance Collection Medallions would be at the top of the list since they can contain different items from many different categories.

So the  list would look something  like this.  Excluding sub categories for now

With the agreed up list this would assist in preventing confusion on where to put items. If an item fits in multiple categories, the list will eliminate some debates on the discussion. I think that a list for Medal, Tokens, and Paper Exonumia should be created but I think starting with Medals and then moving to the others afterwards is a better approach.

Medals

Collection Medallions

Commemorative Medal

Award Medals

Membership Medals

Advertising Medallions

Religious Medals

Here is a good example that would create one member wanting in one place and someone else thinking it belongs in another.

N#442390

It could fit in:

Commemorative Medal

Exhibition Fair and Festival Medals

Souvenir Medals

Advertising Medals (This one is a stretch)

By setting a ranking order as I suggest then which ever is the first on the list reading down is the category for this item.

This particular item could then be under a couple of places in sub categories of Commemorative Medal (Event and Institution) . Which I also think should have a ranking as well.

I believe the only appropriate category for this medal is: Medal > Commemorative medals > Inauguration medals.

Generally speaking, I agree that deciding the category of a medal is not always straightforward. The first step is probably to better describe the categories and add explanations to help differentiate when two categories are close to each other.

I also thought inauguration  was a good idea too. But after looking up the definition of a Dedication of a building  inauguration  didn’t apply any longer.

I just looked it up too. The Oxford English Dictionary gives the following definition:

To devote or throw open to the use of the public (a highway or other open space).

It sounds quite similar to inauguration, in the sense of opening a new place.

Shall I add “deddication” to the definition?

The definition I found was a bit more simplistic. Inauguration - the beginning of something new

Dedication - Ceremony to devote or honor someone or something with their name

As for adding to the definition on Numista. Please do!

But, the point of this was a suggestion to create a ranking. Moving from the top of  the medals category list and when said item falls into a defined category it goes no further down the list. Main reason I think a ranking order would be beneficial is to prevent a collector and referees from disagreeing.

I would even go further with the main list. How many request were there to move one or more items from tokens to coins. A ranking as I suggest below would help (hopefully) prevent some disagreements. I put coins at the bottom because that is where most of the requests came from was to move to coins. So, moving down the list as defined by the guidelines, once an item applies to the something on the list it moves to the next level (sub category) of rankings and so forth. The ranking idea is not to change what exists currently it is to prevent a disagreement about the placement of an item.  All the current guidelines on what is and is not a token or medal or coin is not changing with this idea. Just a pecking order,  hierarchy to assist with placement of an item.

Paper Exonumia

Tokens

Medals

Bsnknotes

Coins

Once a request comes in for an item to be added or moved the member or referee can use the rankings to assist with placement. If it applies to multiple categories it would be irrelevant with the rankings. At least that was my point to begin with.
