Description text:
José Maria Oscar Rodolpho Bernardelli y Thierry, or simply Rodolfo Bernardelli (Guadalajara, December 18, 1852 — Rio de Janeiro, April 7, 1931) was a Mexican sculptor and professor who became a naturalized Brazilian. He also sporadically moved into painting and drawing.
He graduated from the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts under the aegis of classicist principles and perfected himself in Italy, where he absorbed influences from the naturalist and realist schools, building an eclectic work. He became the biggest name in Brazilian sculpture between the end of the Empire and the beginning of the Republic, leaving extensive and qualified work in various genres and receiving several awards. He taught at the Imperial Academy and its successor, the National School of Fine Arts, and directed this institution for 25 years, implementing an important modernizing reform of the curriculum and teaching methodology and collaborating in the construction of a new headquarters. He became involved in several controversies, at a time of great aesthetic and cultural changes in Brazil. He was the artist responsible for the design of the 1901 Brazilian coins, known as "Liberty MCMI".
Thanks in advance!
Vladimir.
