Hello fellow Forum members.

The purpose of this post is to ask for your help in order to correctly classify this coin. I would like to add one from the Lordship of Reckem.

This coin bears the legend “TRAM”This coin bears the legend “TRAM / REC / HEM”, On the reverse the shield is divided diagonally from left to right. The problem is that in the "Coins of the World" catalogue there are no images and no matching legends.

Here are two photos of the coin in question.

The closest are these two coins:

N#447585 (KM#95) The shield is divided in the same way, except that instead of having the eagle shown here in the link, it has the decoration of wavy ribbons. On the other hand, the legend does not match. The one at KM# 95 says "TRAM / REC / KUM" and mine says “TRAM / REC / HEM”.

N#331005 (KM#90) The shield is the same, except that it is divided from right to left, which is the opposite of the one I display. On the other hand, the legend indicated for KM# 90 is “TRA / REC / HEM”On the other hand, the legend indicated for KM# 90 is "TRA / REC / HEM" which differs slightly from the one I show, since it says "TRAM" and not “TRA”.

I want to add a coin from the Lordship of Reckem, and this would be super good, but I want to be sure of what I am buying if it would be from the Lordship of Reckem. Also, find out if you already have an established reference like the previous ones. Thank you very much.

There are MANY variants of the TRA / REC / KEM type of duit, including minor changes in the legend, and the directional change in the arms.

Please go ahead and submit it, with the catalog references in the link provided by Alexander75.

Wow thank you so much for sharing this information, from what I see these coins from the Lordship of Reckem are a completely different world.

There is a misspelling in the english version of Numista:
Reckem nowadays Rekkem

is not the same town as

Reckheim nowadays Rekem, south of Maastrich

https://en.numista.com/forum/topic61995.html

Even though several spelling are found in literature for this former county : Radechem, Radechim, Radekeim, Radekem, Radeken, Radekeym, Radichem, Raickem, Raikem, Raikeum, Rakin, Recheheim, Recheim, Rechem, Recheym, Reckeim, Reckeimb, Reckem, Reckeym, Reckheim, Reckhein, Reckhem, Reckheym, Reckkem, Reckum, Recum, Redechem, Redehem, Redeikem, Redekem, Redekim, Redichem, Reeckhem, Reecquem, Rehem, Reickeim, Reikem, Rekeim, Rekem, Rekemt, Reken, Rekhem, Rekiem, Reycken, Reyckhem, Reykem, etc.

Thank you!  I think we need to correct the issuer name to Reckheim, which is used universally as best I can tell (English, French, German, Dutch), and add the correct modern spelling to the mint name.

There are a few confusing place names like this in Low Countries.  The worst, I think (from a confusion viewpoint) is Hasselt which is (1) a place in Limburg provice of modern Belgium (formerly part of the Bishopric of Liege, and a mint for that issuer)

and ALSO (2) a place in modern Netherlands, province of Overijssel which was a mint for that issuer …

Both were active mints in the 16th/17th centuries (at least only one of the Reckheim/Rekem/Rekkems made coins  🙂)

… The worst, I think (from a confusion viewpoint) is Hasselt …

Even Numista falls for the trap concerning Hasselt.
For example, for Utrecht, the Hasselt mint is misplaced in Belgium :)

The Royal Mint in Hasselt (Overijssel) was closed in 1567 and moved to Utrecht.

Thanks! Now corrected (and I think it was my mistake 😕).

Hello,

Welcomme aboard 😃

Just Magnificent !

Your website is wonderfully well done! and you have great drawing skills !

The Numista collection is limited regarding Reckheim coins. For example, there is no coin from the period of Willem III Van Sombreffe (1475-1484) or Frans Gobert & Ferdinand Gobert d'Aspremont-Lynden (1673-1708).

We look forward to you completing it with your wonderful collection !

Regarding your site:

- I would love to see a historical presentation of counterfeiting.

Duiten.nl already presents a chronological historical presentation of Reckheim, so there is no need to repeat it. The main interest of numismatics is its historical side but in the case of Reckheim it is not only the history of the families of the rulers, it is above all the specificity of counterfeiting!

I would rather like a presentation with the lawsuits (notably against Liège) to understand how these small baronies affiliated to the HRE Westphalia (the county of Reckheim, the abbey of Stavelot, the county of Gronsveld, the city of Thorn, the island on the Meuse of Stevensweert) managed to produce counterfeit money for decades against their powerful neighbors !

I am sure that the Dutch states, the Spanish Netherlands and Liège did not stop at legal lawsuits but must have had some energetic reactions (invasion?, blockade?), apparently without success. The history of copper and silver trafficking along the Meuse, etc.

Matching the genuine coin and its counterfeit on the same image is fun too, with the explanation of the counterfeit legends, usually foolish :)

- A multilingual option Fr / En / Nl would be nice (but not essential, everybody can use Google translate by himself)

- A bibliographical list, accessible on the web, of Reckheim coins would be welcome,

such as: http://numisbel.be/1872_14.pdf or http://numisbel.be/1903_13.pdf

Questions/Corrections :

- on this page, https://reckheim.wordpress.com/munten/ , you mark john de Pyrmont (1504-1514) while wiki indicates: (1504-1522) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q119858562

- In the page: your links to duiten are not good : http://duiten.nl/reckheim instead of http://duiten.nl/reckheim.html

Again, congratulations for your awesome website and your publications!👍

Thanks for your feedback!

It's a great idea to add some general information on counterfeiting! I'll try to add this as soon as possible.

I also have a YouTube-channel: the "Reckheim Coin Channel", where I discuss some Reckheim coins from time to time: https://youtube.com/@reckheimcoinchannel?si=uswz0MG-7s4B7br_

As you can see on my blog, I also have a collection of books about the history of Reckheim (I need to update this overview, the library has grown a lot in meantime). These are a great source of information to me. I can tell that wikipedia (and sometimes even duiten.nl, although it's a fantastic website!) contain several mistakes when it comes to the history of Reckheim and its coinage.

I published a book about the history of coinage in Reckheim ('De echte schat van Reckheim', following my historical comic book ‘De Schat van Reckheim') and organised a ‘Reckheim coin expo’ in the Summer of 2023 in the ‘MuseumChurch’ in Rekem.

I'm working on a book now about the complete history of Rekem/Reckheim and a more encyclopedical work about the coinage. (On duiten.nl you can only find information about the duiten and liards between 1600-1720, while Reckheim also gave out magnificent silver and gold coins and lots of other coin-types (starting from 1335, not always counterfeit!).

I'll try to put my collection of Reckheim coins into the numista-database as soon as possible!

Greetings,

Lieven.

Great !
