5p IoM 1993 - There appears to be a third type (?)

Mine is different to both of these (see below)…

1993

Two types of AA die letters are known.

The picture on the left shows the AA aligned horizontally. The picture on the right has AA on diagonal.

Type 3 ??? (somewhere in between).  Any more?

However, the back of mine has seen better days.  😦

again, great catch.

It is, what it is, or is it.

Indeed, something we can't ignore:

Please link coin pages when you discuss them. In this case:

N#3734

There many variation of the letters that aren't documented in Numista. Some are listed in the Southall Isle of Man Book.

We really need a better name than “die letters” because they don't identify a die.

Southall says (third edition page 258):

6 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

But there aren't pictures so we don't know if the three we now have are included in the Southall count.

Better photo in the daylight (maybe???)…

I think we have four, if we have to be accurate, but only two worth talking about, the multi leveled one and the three others.

Have fun as well

 Bow above upswing A

It should be like that, with Bow not bow

to make it like the previous two lines.

Better?

@LDC do you want to make the CR?

Sorry, CR?

I assume that is the Catalogue change.  Yes - happy to put that through.

Many thanks to all who have contributed.

Good catch and nice graphic, thanks to all, change request just approved.

Just found a similar variation with the 1990 AA & AB issues…

AA - one level, one with the second A higher, one with the second A lower

AB  - one with the A & B level (but with the B downward facing), the other with the B lower than the A

Sorry about the order of the photos - difficult to change on an older tablet.

You will find them with every year for KM# 209.2. From Southall:

1990  AA : 5 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

1990  AB : 2 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

1991  AA : 2 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

1991  AB : 3 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

1992  AA : 2 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

1993  AA : 6 variations of this die mark are known to exist.

Hello,

I added the info regarding the variations listed in Southal catalogue. Will do try to do similar with other circulation coins in future.

Anyway, @LDC63 you can take the better photos (with sharp details of die marks) of individual coins and add them as examples of the type with small comment to show what is the difference (like you mentioned in forum). See examples already added.

Alternativly maybe Ole  will help with his famous graphics for comment seciton but anyway a little better (sharper) photos are welcome.

Understood.  I will indeed try, but I'm using old tech, so the results can be a bit hit and miss.
