Unknown Feudal Japanese Banknote

Pubblicazioni di 8 • visto 122 volte

Hello all,

I have this banknote from Japan and I have been having some difficulties finding the source of where it came from. It consists of a thick paper that is 163 mm in length and 45 mm wide.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

Just bumping this up.

Semi cursive and seal script are unfortunately not my forte, I can read some here but not enough.

丹南役所  - Tannan Administrative Office

文政四辛巳 - 4th year of Bunsei era (metal snake / 18th year of the 60 year cycle / 1821)

@Sakrificed

Tannan Domain, daimyou scrip (Takagi Clan), Silver 5 Fun / rice 1 Shou

Year Bunsei 4th Metal Snake (1821)

I think Tannan Domain scrip is less common. I didn't find much info with Japanese search either…

Hope you could add it into Numista catalog, anywhere under Japan. 🙂

According to page 21 in https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/235265701.pdf, it's a scrip from Tannan Domain. In Kanji it is a “池浚賃米預手形”.

“池浚” - pond dredging

“賃米” - rent rice

“預手形” - Bill on deposit / non-interest IOU

It seems to be a bill for paying the salary for dredging a lake/pond, as Google Translate says “Pond dredging fee bill”.

The characters in the upper part of the first image seem to be:

(Middle column) 銀五分 - Silver 5 Bu

(Left) 米壱升代 - rice 1 shou replacement (maybe “or rice 1 shou instead”)

(Right) 米ハ時之相場 - The Market Price of Rice at the Time (may indicate the actual quantity of rice paid will vary by its market price)

I got the bill name wrong while searching so I did not get it. Thanks for clarification.

In this case 池浚賃米預手形 is divided

池浚賃 IKESARAI-CHIN : pond dredging fee

米預 KOME AZUKE : rice deposit

手形 TEGATA : bill/scrip

Bu is for gold, not for silver. It reads Fun for silver, 10 Fun=1 Monme.

Wow that's alot of information! So when I add this to the catalogue, what should the title be for this note?

5 Fun

Just that.

As Tannan Domain is not yet added, you may add to any nearby domain like Amagasaki.

(Adding to domains is more conveniant for me than to Japan)

The new section is not yet compatible as many entities are still missing, too few examples, and I don't have any catalog book myself.
